Jumping into the new year, I’m not waiting for things to settle. We’re going to dive, headfirst, into our first-ever Minecraft Hardcore series!

Ok, I know. Everyone has some variation of this concept. But, this is different.

But we’re extremely excited for this opportunity as neither Thaddius nor anyone in the CubeLab Crew has never once played hardcore mode. Ever.

What this means is, when I die. That’s it. Game over. No respawn. No take-back.

This is kinda scary, guys!

Why is Minecraft Hardcore scary?

Let’s put it this way. If you spend hours of your life working on something, and then it’s all stripped away, that’s a little fear-inducing. It makes every zombie encounter, every skeleton arrow, every hissing creeper just so much more terrifying.

I remember, sitting in an old rickety chair, staring at an old 19″ CRT in the corner of our dining room. My grubby little hands clutched a Nintendo controller. This is OG Nintendo. No super this or 64 that. Pure, 8-bit glory.

On the screen, I controlled Silver Surfer. One of my childhood favorite superheroes. Mostly because he was shiny and he surfed the cosmic waves, man.

If I died. It was over. I started stage one. There were no saves. All your hard work trickled away to nothing.

How many times did my dog walk under the table, kicking out the power cable? How many times did my mom have me pause and turn the TV off for dinner, only to have someone turn off the Nintendo? Oh, the pain of it all!

That’s the pain I’ll be putting myself through.

“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”

― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

But that’s what we’re going to do. Step into a randomly-generated Minecraft Hardcore world and face inevitable death.

Hopefully, I make it more than one episode before getting blown up, shot, eaten, or just falling off a cliff. That would be embarrassing. Dying because of my own ineptitude.
